What is a Standard Photo?

Our professional scanning equipment automatically selects and scans each photo, both front and back, in high resolution, helping to keep costs down. Photos that can be scanned with this equipment are called 'Standard Photos'. See below for what we consider a standard photo. Not all photos meet these criteria; those that don’t require manual high-resolution scanning and are classified as 'Special Photos'.

The vast majority of loose, undamaged photos from the last 100 years, including polaroids, are 'Standard Photos'. This is about 95-98% of the photos we digitise.

Loose and organised

Photos removed from albums, frames or mat boards and stacked or bundled all facing the right way.

Standard sized

Standard sizes from Wallet to 8" x 10", sizes, as well as Polaroid photos & panoramic photos (up to 8.5" x 36")

Flexible, normal thickness

Standard, loose photo that are flexible (no card or laminated photos).

No thinner than 0.24mm.

Clean

Photos are free from dust, dirt, or any other contamination that will degrade the digital scans.

No adhesive or contamination

No stickiness or double-sided tape present on the rear which prevents feeding into our scanning equipment.

Not damanged or fragile.

Photos that, when handled with reasonable care, won't break, spoil or disintegrate.

What is a Special Photo?

Not all photos can be scanned with our automated feeding scanning system. Those that are too small, too large, photos that are printed on thick card, or photos that are damaged or exceptionally fragile require special handling and therefore need to be scanned in manually.

In some cases, family photo albums have photographs that are glued-in, making them near impossible to remove without causing damage. In these cases, it may be possible to scan the entire album page as a single 'Special Photo'. Get in touch to discuss if this option in right for you.

01

Our Process

Gather the photos you want Digitised.

Take your time to gather and sort the photos you want to digitise. Remove them from your albums so they're loose and ready for scanning. If you wish to keep them grouped, place them in labeled envelopes to keep them organized.

02

Send them in or drop them off.

You can either courier your photos to us or drop them off if you're in Christchurch. Send them in a folder or in bulk in a box—whichever method is easiest and most comfortable for you.

03

Digitising

Once we receive your photos, we carefully digitise each one using our professional scanning equipment. This process ensures high-resolution digital copies of your precious memories. For standard photos, our automated system efficiently handles the scanning, while any special photos requiring extra attention are manually scanned by our skilled team. Additionally, we also scan the back of photos that have handwritten notes to preserve all the details and context of your cherished images.

04

Send them in or drop them off.

After digitising, we carefully package and return your original photos to you at your cost. We then upload the digitised images to a private online album, allowing you to easily view, download, and share them with friends and family. If you prefer, we can also send you a USB drive containing all the digital copies of your photos for an additional cost of $12
